How to restore iPod

It’s important to understand the difference between updating and restoring. Updating simply installs the software that controls iPod and does not affect the songs and files stored on iPod’s disk. Restoring erases the iPod’s disk and restores iPod to its original factory condition.

Warning: Because restoring erases all the songs and files on iPod, back up any files you’ve saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library. If you use the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, see this document for more information.

How to restore iPod

  1. Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
  2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
  3. Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
  4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
  5. Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
  6. Click Restore.
  7. If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.

    • Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
    • Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
  9. During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  10. After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.

How to restore iPod touch

Using the Restore function for your device is part of standard troubleshooting procedure. Restoring your device will delete all the data from your device, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All settings are restored to their factory condition.

Whenever you restore your device, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.

Use the following steps to restore your device:

  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
  2. Connect your device to your computer.
  3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  4. Select the Summary tab.
  5. Select the Restore option.
  6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up option (as seen in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
Prompt text: "Do you want to back up the settings for the iPod before restoring the sofware?"
  7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you’ve backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your phone).
Prompt text: "Are you sure you want to restore the iPod to its factory settings? All of your mnedia and other date will be erased."
  8. Once the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up:
Prompt text: "Your iPod has been successfully restored to factory settings, and is restarting. Please leave your iPod connected. It will appear in the iTunes window after it restarts."
iPhone only: For the iPhone only, after a restore, the iPhone displays the “Connect to iTunes” screen. Keep your device connected until the “Connect to iTunes” screen goes away or you see “iPhone is activated.” If iTunes does not have an Internet connection, you cannot complete this step.
  9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. Once your device is restored and—in the case of the iPhone—in the process of activating, you should be able to see the following in iTunes:
iTunes window text: "Set up your iPhone... An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer."
Select the backup you want for your device and select the Continue button to complete your device’s restoration.
